Case Study
A subsea uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system delivers stable power to essential subsea equipment, protecting operations from surface supply interruptions while withstanding extreme pressures and corrosive underwater environments.
During routine maintenance, Calibre Power Electronics identified a critical inverter failure in a 115VAC subsea UPS. With the system unable to support subsea loads and original components no longer available, a full system replacement was required to maintain uninterrupted operations.
The existing UPS system had reached end-of-life, and sourcing like-for-like industrial-grade replacements would have resulted in long lead times and higher costs. A tailored replacement was needed that could be delivered quickly while meeting the unique voltage and space constraints of the platform.
Calibre Power engineered a custom UPS system optimised to the physical limitations left by the removed unit, while meeting voltage requirements.
Additional elements included:
Using transformers to introduce a neutral point on the input side to ensure the safe operation of the new system.
Installing a step-down transformer to convert 230VAC output from the UPS to the required 115VAC for subsea load supplies
To minimise downtime, Calibre Power:
Swiftly removed the failed UPS unit
Retrofitted the new system into the existing footprint
Conducted full off-load commissioning before connection
Executed a short, planned outage to integrate the new UPS into the platform’s load supplies
This agile retrofit solution enabled uninterrupted subsea operations while avoiding the cost and long lead times of sourcing obsolete replacements. Calibre Power delivered a reliable, space-efficient, and cost-effective system, combining technical innovation with rapid deployment to ensure ongoing platform resilience.
