IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards 2019

Samantha Magowan has been awarded the prestigious Mary George Memorial Prize for Apprentices, at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards 2019. The awards celebrate the young women in engineering and technology who inspire and work tirelessly to promote diversity and inclusion in what was once considered a male profession.

Sam was one of six finalists who attended the awards ceremony. The Mary George Memorial Prize is awarded to “An outstanding female engineering apprentice who has made a contribution within the workplace beyond the realms of her normal duties and demonstrated dynamism in her approach to the solution of engineering problems. A real team player, she will be seen as an ‘all-rounder’ who will act as an enthusiastic role model to encourage other young women to enter the profession of engineering through the apprenticeship route.”

Sam’s line manager, Andy Towse, commented “This award is very well deserved, and we are all extremely proud of Sam. She is an outstanding apprentice who delivers 100% at work and college. She spends a large proportion of her time promoting opportunity within our local schools and colleges, encouraging young women to consider STEM careers. In an area like Scarborough,  where social mobility is a problem It’s really important to have role models like Sam inspiring young people and showing them what’s possible.”

Sam was delighted to win, saying, “I really didn’t expect to win but must thank Dale Power Solutions for the support they give me and the opportunities I have as an apprentice. I am absolutely over the moon.”
